Orchard Spraying with Drone – Protection of Fruit Trees

Fruit growing is an important sector of Bulgarian agriculture. Apples, cherries, peaches, apricots, plums, pears – fruit trees are grown throughout the country and require systematic plant protection. Traditional spraying with ground machinery or hand sprayers has its limitations – it is slow, does not provide full coverage of the crowns and compacts the soil.

Orchard spraying with a drone is a modern solution that overcomes these problems. The drone sprays from above, providing excellent coverage of leaves and fruit, reaches difficult terrain and works significantly faster. In this article you will learn how drone technology helps with effective protection of orchards.

Why Orchards Need Drone Spraying

Crown Coverage from Above

The greatest advantage of drone spraying for fruit trees is coverage from above. Ground sprayers spray from the sides and upwards, but the upper part of the crown often remains insufficiently treated. Yet it is precisely there that diseases and pests find ideal conditions.

The DJI Agras T50 sprays downward, and the powerful airflow from the rotors presses the preparation deep into the crown of the trees. The result is significantly better coverage of all parts of the tree – upper branches, inside of the crown and even the underside of leaves.

Work on Hilly Terrain

Many orchards in Bulgaria are situated on hilly and sloped terrain – especially in Kyustendil, Troyan, the Rhodopes and the Balkan Range area. Working with heavy machinery on a slope is difficult and risky. The drone flies above the terrain and is not affected by the slope – it treats flat and mountain orchards equally effectively.

Zero Soil Compaction

The root system of fruit trees is sensitive to soil compaction. Repeated heavy machinery passes between rows damage surface roots and worsen water balance. With drone spraying the soil remains untouched.

Access to Difficult Places

In old orchards with irregularly placed trees or in orchards on steep slopes, ground machinery simply cannot enter. The drone has no such limitation – it reaches everywhere.

Main Diseases and Pests on Fruit Trees

Apples and Pears

  • Scab (Venturia inaequalis) – the most common disease, causes spots on leaves and fruit
  • Powdery mildew – white coating on leaves and shoots
  • Codling moth (Cydia pomonella) – larvae penetrate the fruit
  • Aphids – deform leaves and shoots
  • Apple blossom weevil – damages flower buds

Cherries and Sour Cherries

  • Monilia (brown rot) – causes fruit rot and blossom blight
  • Cylindrosporium (cherry leaf scorch) – early leaf drop, weakens trees
  • Cherry fly – larvae develop inside ripening fruit

Peaches and Apricots

  • Peach leaf curl (Taphrina deformans) – deformation of leaves
  • Monilia – very widespread in wet weather during flowering
  • Peach leaf roller – damages leaves and shoots

Plums

  • Plum moth – larvae feed on the flesh of the fruit
  • Plum rust – yellow spots on the underside of leaves
  • Plum pox (PPV) – viral disease with fruit deformation

How Orchard Spraying with a Drone Works

Preliminary Assessment

The AirAgro team visits the orchard or discusses its characteristics with you – tree type, age, layout, main problems. A treatment plan is prepared.

Orchard Mapping

GPS coordinates are entered into the drone system. Boundaries, rows, tree height and spraying parameters are determined. Where needed, avoidance zones are set (buildings, water bodies, roads).

Drone Calibration

Flight height, speed and dosage are set according to the specific orchard. With fruit trees the drone typically flies at 2–4 metres above the crowns. The DJI Agras T50 automatically adapts its height to the terrain relief thanks to its radar system.

Spraying

The drone follows the pre-set route. The preparation is dispersed with fine droplets, and the airflow from the rotors provides deep penetration into the crown. Under standard conditions spraying 10 decares of orchard takes about 15–20 minutes.

Documentation

After treatment the grower receives information about the treated areas, parameters used and working conditions.

Advantages of Drone Spraying in Orchards

Better Crown Coverage

Scientific studies show that drone spraying provides 20–30% better coverage of the upper crown compared to ground turbine sprayers. This means more effective protection exactly where it is most needed.

Significantly Faster

The drone treats an orchard many times faster than manual or ground spraying. A larger orchard (50–100 decare) is treated in 2–4 hours, while conventional methods may take an entire day.

Less Water Consumption

The DJI Agras T50 works with 1–3 litres of solution per decare in orchards (compared to 80–150 litres with conventional spraying). Less water means more concentrated preparation and often better adhesion to the leaf surface.

Worker Safety

With manual spraying workers are in direct contact with chemicals. The drone eliminates this risk – the operator stands at a safe distance.

Flexibility with Different Crops

The drone is easily adjusted for different types of fruit trees – from low-intensity apple orchards to tall cherry trees. Spraying parameters are adapted for each species.

When to Spray Orchards – Calendar

Winter Spraying (February – March)

Before bud break, copper preparations and mineral oils are applied. This treatment destroys overwintering forms of diseases and pests.

Spring Treatment (April – May)

At bud break and during flowering – fungicide treatments against scab, monilia and leaf curl. Note: insecticides are avoided during flowering so as not to harm pollinators.

Post-Bloom Treatment (May – June)

Combined treatments with fungicides and insecticides. Fighting codling moth, aphids and diseases. The drone enables timely response under conditions favourable for diseases.

Summer Protection (July – August)

Continued treatment against pests and diseases. With cherries and peaches – protection before and during ripening. Observing pre-harvest intervals.

Autumn Treatment (October – November)

Copper spraying after leaf fall to reduce disease inoculum for the following year.

Fruit Growing in Bulgaria – Context

Bulgaria has a long tradition in fruit growing. The Kyustendil region is known for its apples and cherries, Troyan for pears and plums, Plovdiv and Pazardzhik for peaches and apricots. In recent years modern intensive orchards with drip irrigation and anti-hail nets have also been developing.

These modern orchards need modern plant protection methods. Drone spraying fits perfectly into the concept of precision agriculture and complements investments in modern technologies.

Practical Tips for Fruit Growers

Plan Treatments in Advance

Prepare an annual plant protection plan in accordance with the phenological phases of the trees. Contact AirAgro in advance to ensure timely service.

Combine Preparations

Where possible, combine fungicide + insecticide + foliar fertilizer in one pass. This saves time and costs.

Observe Pre-Harvest Intervals

Especially important with cherries and peaches that ripen earlier. Inform the AirAgro team about the planned harvest date.

Monitor the Orchard

Regular inspection helps with early identification of problems. Use pheromone traps to monitor codling moth and other pests.

Price of Orchard Spraying with a Drone

The price depends on the size of the orchard, type of trees, terrain and number of treatments. For current information on drone spraying prices, contact us.

With orchards, drone spraying is especially economical, as it saves significant manual labour and provides better coverage, leading to healthier trees and better quality harvest.

Vineyards and Orchards – Similar Approach

If besides an orchard you also have vineyards, AirAgro serves both types of plantation. Read more about vineyard spraying with a drone and learn how the drone handles vine plots.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the drone spray tall trees?

Yes. The DJI Agras T50 maintains an automatically set height above crowns and can treat trees of different heights. The drone's radar system adapts flight height in real time.

Is drone spraying safe for the fruit?

Absolutely safe. The drone applies the preparation in the same way as conventional sprayers, just from above. It is important to observe the pre-harvest intervals of preparations – regardless of the method of application.

Is the drone effective with dense orchards?

Yes. With dense intensive orchards the drone's airflow is especially useful – it penetrates between trees and provides coverage from all sides. The drone can be adjusted for different row spacing.

What is the minimum orchard size for drone spraying?

AirAgro treats orchards of any size. Even small orchards of 3–5 decares can be treated effectively.
